CALCULATOR

FINDING FILL WEIGHT

Fill weight is the starting point for all candle calculations.
It must be measured for each container, it cannot be reliably estimated from the label volume.

Water method

(most common, quick)

  • Place the empty container on a scale
  • Tare the scale to zero
  • Fill the container with water to your intended fill level (account for lid clearance if applicable, leave a small gap so the lid does not touch the wax)

Note the weight in grams

Multiply by the density factor for your wax type (0.86 for soy, 0.90 for most others)

The result is your fill weight

Fill weight =
water weight x density factor

Example:
water weight = 220g,
using soy wax

Fill weight = 220 x 0.86 = 189g

Save the fill weight for each container you use regularly. You only need to measure once per container type and fill level.

Melted wax method

(most precise)

  • Melt the wax you plan to use for this candle
  • Place the empty container on a scale
  • Tare the scale to zero
  • Pour the melted wax into the container to your intended fill level
  • Read the weight on the scale — this IS your fill weight, no conversion needed
  • This method is more accurate than the water method because it accounts for the specific density of your exact wax batch. Recommended for production testing.
